Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a short-term, problem-focused form of behavioral treatment that helps people see the difference between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and free them from unhelpful patterns of behavior.

CBT is grounded in the belief that it is a person’s perception of events – rather than the events themselves – that determines how he or she will feel and act in response.

CBT Can Help with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Phobias
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Substance dependency
  • Persistent pain
  • Disordered eating
  • Sexual issues
  • Anger management issues

Most people with clearly defined behavioral and emotional concerns tend to reap the benefits of CBT. If any of the above issues resonate with you, I encourage you to try cognitive behavioral therapy.

With CBT, you’ll be able to adjust the thoughts that directly influence your emotions and behavior. This adjustment process is referred to as cognitive reconstructing, which happens through different CBT techniques.

Some CBT Techniques are:

  • Journalling
  • Challenging beliefs
  • Relaxation
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Social, physical and thinking exercises

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is much more than sitting and talking about whatever comes to mind during a session. CBT sessions are structured to ensure that the therapist and the person in treatment are focused on the different goals of each session, which in turn ensures that each and every session is productive.

If you or someone you know would benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, please contact me today. I would be happy to speak with you about how I may be able to help.

Depression Therapy

Are you feeling hopeless, isolated, and not your usual self?

Do these thoughts often enter your mind?

  • I am worthless and can’t do anything about it.
  • I feel guilty for just wanting to eat, sleep and be alone.
  • I hate who I am these days.
  • I can’t stop crying, which makes me want to stay away from others.
  • I feel gut-wrenching pain, but no one understands.
  • My life and the world around me are dark. I hate it, but I can’t change it.

If you have had any variation of these thoughts and don’t feel like your usual self, chances are you may be suffering from depression.

I want you to know that you are not alone and there are people who can help. Many of my clients find relief in realizing that their struggle does not own them and that there are many options available to once again have hope for their lives.

I understand the social stigmas that come with the label of being depressed and thus aim to help clients sort out their environmental, biological, and circumstantial factors while offering support and care through a very dark time in their lives.

If you are hoping to finally lighten this load and feel like yourself again, contact me today for a free consultation.

LGBTQIA+ Individual Therapy

Stigma-free, affirming, affordable therapy for LGBTQIA+ Individuals. Do you live outside of the heteronormative-cisgender box? Have you been to other supposed “LGBTQ-friendly” counselors who had no idea what you were talking about? Could you use a safe space to process your feelings and assess your goals? Are you seeking transition and need a letter for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)? Or maybe you’re seeking relationship counseling from someone who understands where you’re coming from.

If you can relate to any of the above, then you’ve come to the right place.

No judgments. No biases. Just a strong support system with open ears.

Stigma, in any form, is an impediment to the well-being of those who experience it. Given the stressors that LGBT groups must confront, such as homophobia, prejudice, coming out, and discrimination, finding a therapist who is openly LGBT-friendly or who specializes in LGBT issues is crucial to your personal growth.

As an LGBTQIA+ therapist, I am committed to helping clients of all genders, sexual identities and expressions feel not only safe but truly respected.

If you or someone you know is seeking help from an LGBTQIA+ therapist, contact me today. I would be happy to speak with you about how I can help.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, or MBCT, is designed for people who suffer from repeated bouts of depression or chronic unhappiness. It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness.

Recent research has shown that people who have been clinically depressed three or more times in their life find that learning mindfulness-based skills help considerably to reduce their chances of depression returning.

What does MBCT help treat?

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Food and eating issues
  • Low mood and negative thoughts
  • Body sensations such as weariness and sluggishness
  • Psychosis

If you can relate to any of the above issues, mindfulness-based therapy may be right for you. MBCT helps people separate themselves from their thoughts and moods, and teaches them how to recognize their sense of being. It also aims to give participants the necessary tools to combat depressive symptoms as they arise.

Evidence indicates that mindfulness-based therapy may reduce the rate of depressive relapse by 50%. If you or someone you know may benefit from mindfulness-based therapy, please contact me today for a free consultation. I would be happy to speak with you about how I may be able to help.

Play Therapy

Play therapy makes a difference. Play is an enjoyable, fun activity that elevates our spirits and brightens our outlook on life. Play relieves feelings of stress and boredom and, most importantly, helps us express ourselves.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods, all applying the therapeutic benefits of play. Play therapy helps children to address and resolve their own problems and builds on the natural way that children learn about themselves and their relationships in the world around them.

The Association for Play Therapy defines play therapy as the “systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”

What Does Play Therapy Help?

Play therapy helps children:

  • Become more responsible for their behaviors and develop more successful strategies
  • Develop new and creative solutions to problems
  • Develop respect and acceptance of self and others
  • Learn to experience and express emotion
  • Cultivate empathy and respect for the thoughts and feelings of others
  • Learn new social skills and relational skills with family
  • Develop self-efficacy and a better assuredness about their abilities

Play therapy aims to help a child’s growth and development. The practice of play therapy requires extensive, specialized education, training, and experience. With my knowledge and background, I am confident that you and I can set your child up for success.

If you’re interested in learning more about play therapy and how it can help your child grow, contact me today for a free consultation.

**New** Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy may be well known to most as working in a physical rehab hospital, school system, outpatient clinic, and nursing homes.  Fact.  Occupational therapy’s roots are established in mental health.  It was through engaging people in meaningful and purposeful occupations/activities that creates positive behaviors and improved mental health.  When people are introduced to previous meaningful/purposeful activities and new patterns of motivation, routines and habits transpire.  Now at Twin Lake’s Behavioral Health and Wellness, occupational therapy will work from a centered person approach with those struggling with depression, anxiety, stress, addiction and other behavioral mental health challenges.  Our occupational therapist will guide and coach you along the way to return to a life of balance in the areas of self-care, work and play occupations again.

Sex Therapy

Are you stuck in a sexless marriage?

Do you and your partner have mismatched sexual desires?

Are you having performance issues?

Do you not feel emotionally connected anymore?

Or maybe you want to spice up your love life, but your partner isn’t interested.

If sexual issues are preventing true closeness between you and your partner, you may want to consider sex therapy.

How does Sex Therapy work?

As a sex therapist, I focus on the physical relationship between two people in a relationship, then identify the couple’s attitudes about sex and the sexual problem. From there, I’ll often recommend specific exercises to refocus the couple’s attention and expectations.

Specific objectives may include the following:

  • Learning to eliminate and relax distractions
  • Learning to communicate what you’d like in a positive way
  • Learning nonsexual touching techniques
  • Increasing or enhancing sexual stimulation
  • Minimizing pain during intercourse

If you’d like to explore sex therapy, I want you to know that you aren’t alone in having sexual problems and that I can help. Please contact me today for a free consultation to see if we are a good match.
