Meditation Monday

When you think of meditation, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Candles, incense, soothing music, attempting sitting positions designed for young people with good knees? It can be all of these things, or some, or none of them. Meditation is as unique as each individual that takes the initiative to do it, as long as there are a few key components involved. An allotted amount of time where you won't be disturbed is ideal. You want a place that is quiet and that you find calming. You want to make sure you are comfortable. Once you have those things, you can begin your meditation. Depending on what you want to achieve with your meditation you can add different components like music, incense or candles, water, or specific physical positions. I like laying down (less chance of random, because-I'm-almost-40-pain disrupting the process).

Sometimes I will meditate in order to fall sleep and I will play a video on YouTube of rain or I will count very slowly. Sometimes I meditate to calm an anxiety attack in the moment and I will focus on breathing and grounding myself. Meditation does not have to be a scary or intimidating word. If you're new to the idea and have no idea where to start, there are countless google articles, youtube videos, and apps that can guide you. And hey, even your Twin Lakes Behavioral Health and Wellness therapist can give you some tailored ideas based on the sessions you have had with them.

Why meditate? In my opinion there is no wrong reason to meditate but it could be a different reason or many for everyone. Seven billion people in the world, so that's... Well, you can do the math. Some main reasons are lowering stress, improving focus, quieting the mind, easing pain - either physically or mentally. It may take some practice getting the hang of it but even starting over again, over and over, is a form of mental strengthening. Trust yourself and trust the process. Don't give up. We believe in you and we are here for you!
